WAPSN Workshop 2017 hosted in Portsmouth

Tony Chafer, professor of French and African studies, welcomed guests to the annual workshop organised as part of the West Africa Peace and Security Network (WAPSN). Hosted by the University’s Centre for European and International Studies Research (CEISR), the workshop entitled “Tackling security challenges in West Africa” (29-30 June) involved panel discussions on female jihadism, violent extremism, youth radicalisation, maritime security and the rise of Boko Haram.

The special guest this year was the Ambassador of Senegal, H.E. Professor Cheikh Ahmadou Dieng to present his country’s perspective on West African security.  Interview by UoP News journalist he stated “I am very happy to be part of this event. The geographical location of Senegal makes security issues very important.” The Senegalese delegation also visited the Royal Navy’s HMS Victory earlier in the day.

Organisée par le Centre de Recherche d’Etudes Européennes et Internationales de l’Université de Portsmouth (CEISR), les problématiques du jihadisme féminin, de l’extremisme religieux, de la radicalisation des jeunes,  de sûreté maritime et de la montée en puissance de Boko Haram ont été abordées.

Invité spécial de l’édition 2017 l’Ambassadeur du Sénégal, S.E. Prof. Cheikh Ahmadou Dieng, a présenté la perspective de son pays sur les questions de sécurité de la région. Lors d’un entretien avec UoP News il déclare: “Je suis vraiment ravi de pouvoir prendre part à cet événement. La position géographique du Sénégal fait que les questions de sécurité sont au centre de nos préocupations”. Dans la matinée la délégation sénégalaise avait été reçue par la Marine Royale à bord du vaisseau HMS Victory.
